1 John Chapter 1
1 John 1:1
John declares that Jesus Christ truly existed from the beginning. John and the other apostles personally heard Him, saw Him, observed Him, and touched Him. Jesus was not an imaginary or merely spiritual being—He truly came in human flesh.
1 John 1:2
Jesus Christ, the eternal Life, was revealed to humanity. The apostles personally saw Him and now testify that He is the eternal Son who was with the Father and came into the world.
1 John 1:3
John proclaims what the apostles personally saw and heard so that others may share fellowship with them. This fellowship is ultimately with God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
1 John 1:4
John writes these truths so that believers may experience complete joy through fellowship with God and one another.
1 John 1:5
God is perfectly holy, righteous, and pure. He is Light. There is absolutely no evil, sin, falsehood, or moral darkness in Him at all.
1 John 1:6
A person who claims to have fellowship with God while continually living in sin is lying. His life contradicts his profession of faith.
1 John 1:7
When believers walk in the light of God’s truth and holiness, they enjoy fellowship with one another. The sacrificial blood of Jesus continually cleanses them from every sin.
1 John 1:8
Anyone who claims to have no sin deceives himself and refuses to accept the truth about his sinful condition.
1 John 1:9
When believers honestly confess their sins, God faithfully forgives them and cleanses them from unrighteousness because Christ has already paid the penalty for those sins.
1 John 1:10
Anyone who claims never to have sinned contradicts God’s testimony about humanity and shows that His truth is not living within him.
1 John Chapter 2
1 John 2:1
John writes so that believers will not sin. However, when a believer does sin, Jesus Christ stands before the Father as the believer’s righteous Advocate and representative.
1 John 2:2
Jesus Christ offered Himself as the sufficient sacrifice that satisfies God’s righteous judgment against sin. His sacrifice is sufficient for people throughout the whole world, although its saving benefits belong to those who believe.
1 John 2:3
One evidence that a person truly knows Christ is a growing desire and pattern of obeying His commandments.
1 John 2:4
A person who claims to know Christ but continually refuses to obey Him is lying. His profession is contradicted by his way of life.
1 John 2:5
God’s love is being brought to maturity in the person who obeys His Word. Obedience provides evidence that the believer truly belongs to Christ.
1 John 2:6
Anyone who claims to remain in fellowship with Christ should seek to live as Jesus lived—in obedience, holiness, truth, humility, and love.
1 John 2:7
John is not giving believers an entirely new command. The command to love one another was part of the Christian message they had heard from the beginning.
1 John 2:8
The command is also new because Jesus perfectly demonstrated its meaning and gave believers the power to live it out. The darkness of sin is passing away, and the true light of Christ is already shining.
1 John 2:9
A person who claims to live in God’s light while hating another believer is still walking in spiritual darkness.
1 John 2:10
The person who genuinely loves fellow believers is walking in the light and is less likely to cause himself or others to stumble into sin.
1 John 2:11
Hatred blinds a person spiritually. Someone controlled by hatred walks in darkness and does not understand where his sinful path is leading.
1 John 2:12
John reassures believers that their sins have been forgiven because of Jesus Christ and His finished work.
1 John 2:13
John addresses believers at different levels of spiritual maturity. Mature believers know Christ deeply, younger believers have overcome the evil one, and new believers have come to know God as their Father.
1 John 2:14
Mature believers know the eternal God. Growing believers are spiritually strong because God’s Word remains in them, enabling them to overcome Satan’s lies and temptations.
1 John 2:15
Believers must not love the sinful world system or make its values, pleasures, and priorities the objects of their devotion. Love for the world is incompatible with wholehearted love for God.
1 John 2:16
The sinful world appeals to physical cravings, selfish desires for what people see, and pride in possessions, achievements, and social status. These desires come from the fallen world, not from God.
1 John 2:17
The sinful world and everything people desire within it are temporary and passing away. The person who does God’s will possesses eternal life and will remain forever.
1 John 2:18
John warns that they are living in the final period of God’s redemptive plan. The ultimate Antichrist will come, but many people already display the spirit of antichrist by opposing Christ and denying the truth about Him.
1 John 2:19
False teachers left the fellowship because they never truly belonged to Christ. Their departure exposed the reality that they were not genuine believers.
1 John 2:20
True believers have received the Holy Spirit from Christ. The Spirit enables them to recognize and understand the truth.
1 John 2:21
John writes because believers know the truth and can recognize that lies and false teachings do not come from God.
1 John 2:22
The liar is the person who denies that Jesus is the Christ—the promised Messiah and Son of God. Anyone who rejects the Son also rejects the Father.
1 John 2:23
No one can possess a genuine relationship with God the Father while rejecting Jesus Christ. The person who truly acknowledges the Son also has the Father.
1 John 2:24
Believers must continue holding firmly to the true gospel they heard from the beginning. Remaining faithful to that truth demonstrates fellowship with both the Son and the Father.
1 John 2:25
God has promised eternal life to everyone who genuinely belongs to Jesus Christ.
1 John 2:26
John writes these warnings because false teachers are attempting to deceive believers and lead them away from Christ.
1 John 2:27
The Holy Spirit lives within genuine believers and teaches them the truth. This does not eliminate the need for faithful human teachers, but it enables believers to recognize falsehood and remain in Christ.
1 John 2:28
Believers should continue faithfully abiding in Christ so that when He returns, they may meet Him with confidence rather than shame.
1 John 2:29
Because God is perfectly righteous, those who have been born of Him will demonstrate a growing pattern of righteous living.
1 John Chapter 3
1 John 3:1
God has demonstrated extraordinary love by adopting believers into His family and calling them His children. The unbelieving world does not understand believers because it does not truly know God.
1 John 3:2
Believers are already God’s children, although their future glorified condition has not yet been fully revealed. When Christ appears, they will be made like Him because they will see Him as He truly is.
1 John 3:3
Everyone who expects to see Christ and become like Him seeks to live a pure and holy life now.
1 John 3:4
Sin is rebellion against God and the violation of His holy law. Everyone who practices sin acts lawlessly against Him.
1 John 3:5
Jesus came to remove sin, and He was completely without sin Himself.
1 John 3:6
The person who remains in Christ does not continually practice sin as an unrepentant way of life. Persistent, habitual rebellion against God reveals that a person does not truly know Christ.
1 John 3:7
Believers must not allow anyone to deceive them about the relationship between faith and conduct. A person who practices righteousness gives evidence of belonging to the righteous Christ.
1 John 3:8
The person whose life is characterized by continual, unrepentant sin reflects the work of the devil. Jesus came to destroy Satan’s works and free people from sin’s rule.
1 John 3:9
A person who has been spiritually born of God cannot remain comfortable in a continual pattern of unrepentant sin. God has given that person a new nature that resists sin.
1 John 3:10
The difference between God’s children and the devil’s children becomes evident through their lives. Those who continually reject righteousness and refuse to love fellow believers show that they do not belong to God.
1 John 3:11
The command believers have heard from the beginning is that they should love one another.
1 John 3:12
Believers must not imitate Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother Abel. Cain hated Abel because Cain’s deeds were evil while Abel’s were righteous.
1 John 3:13
Believers should not be surprised when the unbelieving world hates them because their righteous lives expose the world’s sin.
1 John 3:14
Love for fellow Christians is evidence that a person has passed from spiritual death into eternal life. Persistent hatred reveals continuing spiritual death.
1 John 3:15
Hatred is the sinful attitude from which murder grows. A person controlled by hatred gives no evidence that eternal life is living within him.
1 John 3:16
Jesus showed the true meaning of love by willingly sacrificing His life for believers. Christians should therefore be willing to sacrifice themselves for one another.
1 John 3:17
A person who has material resources but refuses to help a fellow believer in genuine need should question whether God’s love is truly operating within him.
1 John 3:18
Christian love must be demonstrated through sincere actions, not merely expressed through words and empty promises.
1 John 3:19
Practical love for others provides evidence that believers belong to the truth and gives reassurance before God.
1 John 3:20
Even when a believer’s conscience condemns him, God is greater than human feelings and knows everything perfectly. Assurance must rest in God’s truth, not merely in changing emotions.
1 John 3:21
When believers are walking obediently and their consciences are clear, they can approach God with confidence.

Believers can pray with confidence when they are living obediently and seeking to do what pleases God. Their desires increasingly agree with His will.
1 John 3:23
God’s central command is that people believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as Christ commanded.

Those who obey God demonstrate that they remain in fellowship with Him and He lives within them. The indwelling Holy Spirit confirms God’s presence in their lives.
1 John Chapter 4
1 John 4:1
Believers must not automatically accept every spiritual claim or teacher. They must test teachings against God’s revealed truth because many false prophets have entered the world.
1 John 4:2
A true teacher acknowledges that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, genuinely came in human flesh.
1 John 4:3
Anyone who rejects the biblical truth about Jesus does not speak from God. Such teaching reflects the spirit of antichrist, which is already active in the world.
1 John 4:4
Believers belong to God and have overcome false teachers because the Holy Spirit living within them is greater than Satan, who influences the unbelieving world.
1 John 4:5
False teachers belong to the world. They speak according to its sinful values, and worldly people willingly listen to them.
1 John 4:6
The apostles belong to God and faithfully proclaim His truth. Those who truly know God receive apostolic teaching, while those who reject God refuse it. This helps believers distinguish truth from error.
1 John 4:7
Believers should love one another because genuine love comes from God. A life characterized by godly love provides evidence of the new birth and a relationship with Him.
1 John 4:8
A person who does not love others does not truly know God because love is an essential part of God’s holy nature.
1 John 4:9
God demonstrated His love by sending His one and only Son into the world so that sinners might receive eternal life through Him.

True love began with God, not humanity. He loved sinful people and sent His Son to be the sacrifice that satisfies His righteous judgment against their sins.

God’s love reaches maturity in believers so they may face the coming judgment with confidence. Because they belong to Christ, they are no longer under condemnation.
1 John 4:18
God’s mature love removes the terror of eternal punishment. Fear expects judgment, but the believer who understands God’s saving love can rest confidently in Christ.
1 John 4:19
Believers love God and others because God first loved them and awakened love within them.
1 John 4:20
A person cannot truthfully claim to love God while hating a fellow believer. Refusing to love someone who can be seen exposes the emptiness of claiming to love the unseen God.
1 John 4:21
God commands everyone who loves Him to love fellow believers as well.
1 John Chapter 5
1 John 5:1
Everyone who genuinely believes that Jesus is the Christ has been spiritually born of God. Those who love God the Father will also love His children.
1 John 5:2
Believers know they truly love God’s children when they love God and obey His commandments.
1 John 5:3
Love for God is demonstrated through obedience. His commandments are not an unbearable burden to those whose hearts have been changed by Him.
1 John 5:4
Everyone born of God overcomes the sinful world system. This victory comes through genuine faith in Jesus Christ.
1 John 5:5
The person who overcomes the world is the one who truly believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
1 John 5:6
Jesus Christ was publicly revealed through His baptism and His sacrificial death. The Holy Spirit testifies that these truths about Jesus are completely trustworthy.
1 John 5:7
The Holy Spirit bears witness to the truth about Jesus Christ because the Spirit Himself is truth.
1 John 5:8
The Spirit, the water associated with Christ’s baptism, and the blood of His sacrificial death all agree in testifying that Jesus is the Son of God and the promised Savior.
1 John 5:9
People ordinarily accept reliable human testimony. God’s own testimony concerning His Son is infinitely greater and more trustworthy.
1 John 5:10
The person who believes in the Son possesses God’s testimony within his heart through the Holy Spirit. The person who rejects God’s testimony treats God as though He were a liar.
1 John 5:11
God’s testimony is that He has given believers eternal life, and this life is found only in His Son.
1 John 5:12
The person who has Jesus Christ has eternal life. The person who does not have Christ does not possess eternal life.
1 John 5:13
John writes so that those who genuinely believe in Jesus Christ may know with confidence that they possess eternal life.
1 John 5:14
Believers may approach God confidently, knowing that He hears prayers offered according to His will.
1 John 5:15
Because God hears prayers that agree with His will, believers can be confident that He will answer them according to His wisdom and purposes.
1 John 5:16
When believers see a fellow Christian committing sin, they should pray for that person’s restoration. John distinguishes ordinary sin from a deliberate, final rejection of Christ that leads to eternal death.
1 John 5:17
Every act of unrighteousness is sin, although not every sin indicates a final and irreversible rejection of Christ.
1 John 5:18
A person who has been born of God does not continue living under sin’s controlling power. Christ protects the genuine believer, and the evil one cannot claim or possess him.
1 John 5:19
Believers belong to God, while the unbelieving world remains under the powerful influence of Satan.

Jesus Christ has come and given believers spiritual understanding so they may know the true God. Believers are united with God through His Son, Jesus Christ, who is the true God and eternal life.

John closes by warning believers to guard themselves from idols—anything or anyone that takes God’s rightful place in their hearts, worship, trust, or devotion.
General Summary of 1 John
First John was written to give genuine believers assurance of eternal life, strengthen them in the truth, and protect them from false teachers.
