Hebrews Chapter 1
Jesus Christ Is God’s Supreme and Final Revelation
Hebrews 1:1
Long ago, God spoke to His people many times and in many different ways through the Old Testament prophets.
Hebrews 1:2
In these last days, God has spoken fully and finally through His Son, Jesus Christ. God appointed Jesus as heir of everything, and through Him He created the universe.
Hebrews 1:3
Jesus perfectly reveals God’s glory and exact nature because He is fully God. He continually sustains the universe by His powerful word. After paying for our sins through His death, He rose and sat down in the place of highest honor and authority beside God the Father.
Hebrews 1:4
Jesus is far greater than the angels because He has inherited a name, position, and authority infinitely superior to theirs.
Hebrews 1:5
God never called any angel His Son in the unique way He spoke of Jesus. Jesus alone is the eternal Son of God and the promised King.
Hebrews 1:6
When God brings His Son into the world, He commands all the angels to worship Him. Because only God is worthy of worship, this shows that Jesus is fully divine.
Hebrews 1:7
God describes angels as His servants who quickly carry out His commands, like winds and flames of fire.
Hebrews 1:8
But of the Son He (God the Father) says, “Your throne, O God (He calls Jesus God), is forever and ever, And the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
But God speaks to the Son as God and declares that His throne and kingdom will last forever. Jesus rules with perfect righteousness and justice.
Hebrews 1:9
You (Jesus) have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God (the Father), Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”
Jesus perfectly loves righteousness and hates wickedness. Because of His complete holiness and obedience, God has exalted Him above all others and filled Him with supreme joy.
Hebrews 1:10
And,
“You, Lord (Jesus), in the beginning founded the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands;
Jesus existed in the beginning and created the earth and the heavens. He is not part of creation; He is the eternal Creator of everything.
Hebrews 1:11
They will perish, but You remain; And they all will wear out like a garment,
The heavens and the earth will eventually wear out and pass away, but Jesus will remain forever because He is eternal and unchanging.
Hebrews 1:12
And like a mantle You will roll them up; like a garment they will also be changed. But You (Jesus) are the same, and Your years will not come to an end.”
Jesus will one day fold up the present creation like an old garment and replace it. Creation changes, but Jesus never changes, grows old, or comes to an end.
Hebrews 1:13
God has never invited an angel to sit at His right hand and rule until every enemy is completely defeated. This position belongs only to Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 1:14
Angels are spiritual servants sent by God to help and minister to those who will inherit salvation. They serve God’s people, but they are never equal with Jesus.
Summary of Hebrews Chapter 1
Hebrews Chapter 1 declares the absolute supremacy of Jesus Christ.
In the past, God spoke through the prophets, but He has now spoken fully and finally through His Son. Jesus is greater than every prophet and every angel because He is not merely another messenger from God—He is God the Son.
Jesus Christ:
- Is the heir of all things.
- Created the universe.
- Perfectly reveals God’s glory and nature.
- Sustains everything by His power.
- Paid for the sins of His people.
- Rose and sat at God’s right hand.
- Is worshiped by angels.
- Rules from an eternal throne.
- Loves righteousness and hates wickedness.
- Created the heavens and the earth.
- Remains forever while creation passes away.
