Teach Me To Pray (In progress)

The Lord’s Prayer is more than a prayer to memorize—it is a model Jesus gave us for how to approach God. Each phrase teaches an attitude of the heart and a practical action to take.

The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13)

1. “Our Father in heaven…”
What it means: Remember who God is. He is your loving, holy, heavenly Father.
Action:

  • Come to God with humility and confidence.
  • Thank Him for adopting you into His family through Christ.
  • Trust that He loves and cares for you.

2. “Hallowed be Your name.”
What it means: Honor God’s name as holy, worthy, and above all else.
Action:

  • Worship Him.
  • Praise His character and attributes.
  • Desire that your life brings Him glory.

3. “Your kingdom come.”
What it means: Ask that God’s rule spreads in your heart, your family, your church, and throughout the world.
Action:

  • Pray for people to be saved.
  • Pray for the growth of God’s church.
  • Look forward to Christ’s return.

4. “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
What it means: Surrender your plans to God’s perfect will.
Action:

  • Choose obedience over personal preference.
  • Ask God to help you follow His Word.
  • Be willing to change when He directs you.

5. “Give us this day our daily bread.”
What it means: Depend on God for everything you need today.
Action:

  • Pray for your physical needs.
  • Pray for wisdom, strength, and spiritual nourishment.
  • Be thankful for God’s daily provision.

6. “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”
What it means: Confess your sins and extend forgiveness to others.
Action:

  • Admit your sins honestly.
  • Receive God’s forgiveness through Christ.
  • Forgive those who have hurt you.
  • Restore relationships whenever possible.

7. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
What it means: Recognize your need for God’s protection and strength.
Action:

  • Ask God to guard your heart.
  • Avoid situations that encourage sin.
  • Put on the full armor of God.
  • Resist the devil and stand firm in faith.

8. “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (included in many Bible translations and traditional recitations)
What it means: End with confidence that God is sovereign over all things.
Action:

  • Trust God’s power.
  • Give Him all the glory.
  • Rest knowing He is in control.

The Lord’s Prayer as a Simple Prayer Pattern

  1. Begin with worship — Praise God for who He is.
  2. Honor His holiness — Reverence His name.
  3. Seek His kingdom — Pray for His work to advance.
  4. Submit to His will — Choose obedience.
  5. Depend on Him daily — Ask for today’s needs.
  6. Confess and forgive — Keep your heart clean before God.
  7. Ask for protection — Pray for victory over temptation and evil.
  8. Finish with praise and trust — Give God the glory.

  5. “Give us this day our daily bread.”
    • Today’s language: Lord, please provide what I need today.
    • Action: Ask for wisdom, strength, peace, health, provision, and whatever today’s challenges require.
  6. “Forgive us our debts…”
    • Today’s language: God, forgive me where I’ve failed You, and help me forgive the people who’ve hurt me.
    • Action: Admit your sins honestly. Let go of bitterness. Choose forgiveness.
  7. “Lead us not into temptation…”
    • Today’s language: Help me stay away from what pulls me away from You, and protect me from the enemy.
    • Action: Ask for self-control, discernment, courage, and God’s protection throughout the day.
  8. “For Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.”
    • Today’s language: God, You’re in control. You have all the power, and You deserve all the credit.
    • Action: End your prayer with confidence, gratitude, and trust.

The Lord’s Prayer in One Simple Flow

  • Remember who God is.
  • Worship Him.
  • Put His plans ahead of yours.
  • Trust Him to provide what you need today.
  • Confess your sins and forgive others.
  • Ask Him to keep you close and protect you from evil.
  • Finish by thanking Him because He’s in control.

In today’s language, Jesus is essentially teaching us:

“When you pray, don’t just ask for things. Start with God. Honor Him. Align your life with His will. Trust Him for today’s needs. Keep your heart clean. Stay close to Him. Depend on His strength. And remember that everything ultimately belongs to Him.”

That pattern is just as practical today as it was when Jesus first taught it.
