As you hear or read the Good News of Jesus Christ—the greatest life ever lived and what He has done for you—the Holy Spirit begins His unique work. In His perfect timing, He shines sufficient light into the darkness of your sin. Because of our fallen nature, we are spiritually blind, unwilling, and unable to come to Christ on our own.
The Holy Spirit draws you to Christ, opens your eyes and mind to the truth, tugs on and softens your hardened heart, and convicts you concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8-11).
After the conviction of the Holy Spirit, you come to realize that you are a sinner before a holy God—just like the rest of us—lost, condemned, unable to save yourself, and in desperate need of a Savior— Jesus Christ!
And all you can do is humble yourself and cry out to God for mercy and ask Him to save you— and as the Holy Spirit leads you, repent of your sin and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone.
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.” (Psalm 51:1)
David humbly cries out to God for mercy after recognizing the seriousness of his sin. He does not appeal to his own goodness or make excuses. He asks God to forgive and cleanse him because of God’s lovingkindness, compassion, and abundant mercy.
The Holy Spirit will lead you to know just what to say and how to say it. This is your response to the conviction of the Holy Spirit that God requires. It is the beginning of your conversion through genuine repentance and saving faith.
Turn to, trust in and rely on Jesus for your salvation.

And God, by His grace, forgives you, declares you righteous through the righteousness of Jesus and gives you eternal life!
